How to get an SEAI grant for your home EV charger in Ireland
Thinking about installing an electric vehicle (EV) home charger in Ireland? The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) offers a grant of up to €300 to help cover the cost.
Whether you're a homeowner, an EV owner, or even a landlord, this grant can make home charging more affordable. Here's everything you need to know about applying for the SEAI Home Charger Grant.
What is the SEAI home charger grant?
The SEAI Home Charger Grant is a government-backed scheme designed to help homeowners install smart EV chargers at their properties. The funding is provided by Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI) and administered by SEAI. The grant covers up to €300 of the purchase and installation costs of an approved home charging unit.
Who can apply?
The grant is open to homeowners in Ireland, even if they don’t currently own an electric vehicle. This means that landlords and those planning to buy an EV in the future can also apply.
To qualify, you must:
- Have a private off-street parking space where the charger will be installed.
- Ensure the charger is connected to your home’s electricity supply.
- Use a Safe Electric Ireland-registered electrician for installation.
- Apply before installing the charger (work done before approval won’t be covered).
- Have not previously received a home charger grant for the same property.
How to apply for the SEAI home charger grant?
- Gather your information: You’ll need your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) from your electricity bill and your home’s Eircode.
- Apply online: Visit the SEAI website and complete the EV Home Charger Grant application form.
- Receive your approval: If your application is successful, SEAI will email you a Letter of Offer and a Payment Request Form.
- Install your charger: Choose a registered electrician to install an SEAI-approved smart charger.
Submitting your claim
After installation, submit the Payment Request Form along with:
- A copy of the electrician’s Certificate Number 3
- Test record sheet
- Invoice from the electrician
- Photos of the installed charger
SEAI processes payments within 4-6 weeks of receiving your complete application.
Third-party applications
Businesses, landlords, or property management companies can apply on behalf of residents. To do so, they must first register with SEAI by submitting their Company Registration Office (CRO) number. Once approved, third parties can manage multiple applications for tenants or homeowners.
Why install a home EV charger?
- Convenience – Charge your EV overnight and start every morning with a full battery.
- Cost savings – Home charging is cheaper than public charging, especially with night-rate electricity tariffs.
- Future-proofing – Even if you don’t own an EV yet, installing a charger now increases your property’s value and prepares you for the switch.
