Cost to charge electric car at home?

The cost will differ based on your charger and vehicle type in question. However, home charging is a cost effective way to maintain your battery levels.

Charging an electric car at home offers convenience and affordability, particularly with a typical home charger providing around 7 kW of power. With a 60 kWh battery, it takes nearly 8 hours to charge from empty to full using a 7 kW charging point. However, most drivers opt for top-up charging rather than waiting for a full recharge.

On average, with a 7-kW charger, you can expect to add approximately 20-40 miles of range for every hour the car is connected to the charger. This makes it viable to recharge the battery overnight, leveraging lower electricity rates and ensuring the car is ready for use the next day.

If you aim to charge your EV from 20% to 80% battery capacity, it typically takes between eight to twelve hours. This timeframe accommodates the slower charging speeds associated with topping up, ensuring a gradual and efficient recharge process while the vehicle is not in use.

In summary, while charging an electric car at home may take some time, leveraging overnight charging and taking advantage of specific EV tariffs can make it a cost-effective and convenient option for maintaining your vehicle’s battery levels.
