Unlocking the UK Depot Charging Scheme: What it means for Weev & Fleet Operators
As the UK transitions toward clean transport, the Depot Charging Scheme , launched on 16 July 2025 offers a transformative opportunity for fleet operators nationwide. Powered by the Department for Transport (DfT), this scheme backs wall‑to‑wall deployment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure at fleet depots serving HGVs, vans, and coaches.
What the Depot Charging Scheme Covers
- Part-funding of up to 75% of eligible chargepoint and civil engineering costs, capped at £1 million per organisation across multiple depot sites.
- Support for both public and private sector fleets, including local authorities and non‑profits operating across Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales
Eligibility in Focus for Fleet Operators
To qualify:
- Be a registered fleet operator operating in the UK for at least one year.
- Either own the depot, or have landlord consent to install chargepoints.
- Own, lease, or have ordered at least one battery-electric van, HGV, or coach.
- Ensure sufficient grid capacity and be able to complete all installations by 31 March 2026

Why This Scheme Matters: Aligning with Zero Emission Goals
The Depot Charging Scheme is a cornerstone of the UK’s broader net‑zero transport strategy. This UK initiative complements vehicle subsidies like the Plug‑in Van and Truck Grant, supporting holistic electrification by funding both zero-emission vehicles and the necessary infrastructure.
In July 2025, the Government unveiled a wider £63 million EV investment package, allocating £30 million to depot charging, alongside additional funds for residential and NHS fleet charging projects.
